Linga Longa
11 March - 14 March 2024
A group of 33 Probus members from Greenway and other local clubs travelled to Yarrawonga and spent 4 days looking around this part of North East Victoria.
The first day started with a relaxing cruise on Lake Mulwala, then off on an interesting day in Glenrowan, back in time to the Kelly’s of the late 1870s and 1880s. Here we enjoyed a semi-live theatre production of Ned Kelly’s last stand with the siege coming to life using animatronics and computerized robots.
The second day was a trip to Bright and Myrtleford. We stopped for morning tea at the Red Steer and Emu Farm and had the biggest scones you have ever seen. In Myrtleford we stopped at the Pheonix Tree and visited the Pumpkin Seed Company where we tasted a variety of seeds. We came away with pumpkin seeds, oils, fresh fruit and even chocolates.
The third day was a cruise on the Murray River from Echuca, on a paddle steamer (PS Canberra) with morning tea aboard – very relaxing. On our way home we had a look at the sensational painting of a super parrot on the grain silo at Picola and then at Byramine Homestead, built in 1842 by Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law Elizabeth. Beside looking over this unique historic homestead we sampled some boutique beer, wines and ciders.
On the last day we travelled to Beechworth for morning tea in the historic Nicholas Hotel. This hotel was absolutely beautiful inside. Here we were also entertained by Lazy Harry with songs and bush poetry.
We ate a lot and laughed a lot. Played bingo and trivia, and wore silly hats, before heading home to Canberra. A wonderful time was had by all.

A group of us still met for lunch at the George Harcourt Inn at Gold Creek. Given it was quite a cold day, we were lucky to be seated inside beside the cosy wood fire. Everyone in our group seemed to have the same idea of ordering 'cold weather' plates from the menu. The food was plentiful and tasty and we had a nice time catching up.
