A 'Christmas Lunch' is held each year for members and partners.

Occasionally during the year we hold a Lunch immediately after a general meeting. It is usually held in the Beaumont Bowling Club venue, but sometimes may be held at a local hotel.

Our ‘Annual Picnic’ is a favourite where members and partners enjoy a catered picnic style lunch. It is sometimes held in Hazelwood Park which is one of Burnside's major reserves where there is ample off-street parking at Davenport Terrace, Hazelwood Park. SA 5066  Toilet facilities are also close by. Often if the predicted weather is not good the Annual Picnic is held in the Burnside Christian Church Hall, 88 Lockwood Road, Burnside.  In both cases food will be provided.  If in the Park bring tables, chairs – perhaps a drink or two and nibbles. If in the Hall there is no need to bring tables and chairs, just a drink or two and nibbles.  Cost:  $15 per head to be paid at the March meeting. A Check List (protected with the GOPC General Membership Password) is available as a guide for the organisation of the Annual Picnic.

Strolling with a Purpose’ or SWAP as it was commonly referred to, was a regular outing for more active Probus Club members who took part in a casual walk around a local Adelaide neighbourhood or nearby Adelaide Hills' places of interest, often with information provided by an expert visitor or a knowledgeable member who had researched the subject.   John Higgins started the SWAP strolls in July 2004, and he and his wife Liz researched each walk by walking the walk, assessing the degree of difficulty and the general terrain, researching the history of the area and its buildings and points of interest and working out the start and finish points and available parking.   Walks included botanic gardens, iconic buildings, historic suburbs, cemeteries, school campuses and recently completed constructions of all sorts. Each stroll took one to two hours and was usually followed by lunch afterwards.  In 2019, after over fourteen years involvement, John Higgins retired as SWAP Leader and the activity lapsed.  See our SWAP Section for previous SWAP strolls.

The SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO) Summary for GOPC

by Membership Officer Brian Rice

4th December 2023

The SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer is available to senior South Australians from the South Australian Government, if they hold a concession card such as a Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card or an Australian Government Pension Card.

It took me days to discover that the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO), which is ONLY available via Origin Energy, provides 17% off BOTH the electricity RATES and the SUPPLY CHARGE and 11% off BOTH the gas usage and the supply charge.

It is possible to compare a concession plan with other plans, once you know what Origin Energy calls their SACEDO discounted plans.  It took me days to discover which of the multitude of Origin Energy’s plans (fifty-nine at last count) have a concession available.

Be warned, many of the other provider’s plans use terms such as “Residential Seniors” and “Simply Seniors” etc, but have nothing to do with SACEDO, or can match the SACEDO discount.

The bottom line is that a significant discount to “normal plans” is available if you are eligible.

In my case, I was able to save about $650pa on my total energy bills and $120pa on my Internet bills.
