  VALE - SJEF BERVOETS

1930 - 28.8.2024

He was 94.5 years old

Forever the thinker.

Sjef and Ans Bervoets were very special to Ray and myself. We have known them and their three daughters since 1967, when we bought our first home next to them in Koonung Road, North Blackburn. They always enjoyed our daughter Allison standing in her cot and waving to them when they were in their front garden.

It is a small world - as a house move for them saw their new home next to James Stuart lasting over 40 years.

They then moved to Regis in Central Road, Blackburn.

Sjef’s father had a dairy farm and orchard in Holland and he attended the University in Delft. Ans was the daughter of the principal of the school they attended.

Sjef and Ans migrated to Australia a few years after the war and settled in Sydney for a number of years and eventually moved to Melbourne.  Sjef was a cartographer and Reader at the University of Melbourne for at least 30 years. He was at heart a mathematician and a surveyor, but more as a cartographer and in photogrammetry (Photogrammetry is the science and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment through the process of recording, measuring and interpreting photographic images and patterns of electromagnetic radiant imagery and other phenomena).

Sjef undertook camping trips with his students, which he hated with a passion but it had to be done. He did not think much of footy, either.

Just to tantalise your mind:

Abstract

Often digitized strings need to be transformed from one reference system to another. Traditionally, transformation required a unique correspondence between points in order to compute the parameters. A new concept is developed, whereby elongated features are matched rather than individual points. Once the transformation parameters have been determined, digital maps may be merged, updated, compared or assembled into composite units from individual parts. A program is available to execute those operations.

Sjef retired at age approx 60 years and had a long and full retirement learning more and more and enjoying his daughters Bolinda, Miriam and Marjolein. Sjef took on woodwork and had quite an extensive workshop; he attended U3A and was constantly learning something new, be it a language or general ‘scientific’ knowledge. His memory was something to wonder at – he knew lots about every topic and if by chance he did not know, he made it his business to find out. He found out.

Ans was always involved in community activities and heavily involved with migrants. They both attended the then Blackburn Presbyterian Church and later the Uniting Church where Ans taught Sunday School. She died in December 2023. They both enjoyed classical music very much.

Sadly over recent years Sjef, lost his hearing and vision and this made his life quite difficult but he continued with large print computer programs and with assistance from his daughter Miriam, continued to be a thinker.

A perfect gentleman.

VALE – KEITH DIMOND

1936 – 2024

A man who loved a red jumper.

Sadly, Keith died on Thiursday 22 August and we will miss the man we all knew and respected.

He was raised on a dairy fasrm in the Warnambool area with his favourtyie saying on meeting someone when asked how he was, 'I'm above the grass' - goes with cows I guess.

Keith hjad one daughter Michelle, two grandsons Daniel and Chris and a greatr grandson, Jack, all as tall as Grandpa.

Keith had been a member of the then Nunawading Probus Club since 1995 and served in various committee roles over many years. He continued his membership through the amalgamation with the Mitcham Probus Club.

He was a very keen sprotsman, playing lawn bowls, football and particularly cricket where he excelled as a fast bowler. He was a lover of the Mighty Tigers.  He was Chief Manager with the ANZ Bank and covered Victoria and Tasmania, In latter years of work he was transferred to Esanda.  Keith retired in 1991.

Keith lost the love of his life, Jan, after a long illness but easrlier he still continued to take Jan on many Probus outings as there were always other ‘ladies’ to help him along the way and kept Jan occupied. Keith certainly enjoyed the ‘break’ and was able to talk to the other men on the outings.
