FEBRUARY 2025

Probus Club of Mitcham Nunawading
Chris Summers

WITH Christmas and New Year behind us, Probus is back to normal and looking forward to another year of friendship and fun activities.

We finished 2024 with a Christmas lunch at the Canterbury International Hotel with a delicious meal for the 54 members who attended. Our usual quiz testedattendees with curly Christmas flavoured questions helped along with chocolates.

We will start 2025 with a BYO BBQ in February at the home of our President Gerry and his wife Kate. Outings being considered for 2025 include the Gulf Station at Yarra Glen, Johnston Collection in East Melbourne, Desal Plant in Wonthaggi and a Government House tour, all to be confirmed.

Our January speaker was Darren Arnott on Italian Prisoners of War. February speaker will be Lex deMan, former detective, part of the team that cracked the cult known as The Family run by Anne Hamilton-Byrne.

Regular activities include a photography group, monthly Sunday lunch, Monday morning coffee group, Bird Watchers, Shares trading group, Footy tipping and
a Movie group.

If you have an interest to join a Probus group, please try this happy and friendly group.

As time flies, we are approaching the Festive Season and celebrations are underway. Probus is celebrating Christmas with lunch at the Canterbury International Hotel in Forest Hill on Tuesday 10 December.

If you would like to attend to see what we do, please contact the President Gerry Cross on 0418 130 499. This function might encourage you to join our group and you would be most welcome.

Over the past two months members have enjoyed many activities. The photography group walked the streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood snapping many sites be they older houses, public housing, street scenes and food sources – then enjoyed lunch at one of these venues.

The Monday coffee group continues to meet at Gourmet Girl in Laburnum, the film group meet monthly at the Balwyn Cinema and then lunch – food is always on the menu. The Bird Group only meet twice a year in Autumn and Spring and walk the Blackburn Creeklands observing and counting birds and are led by bird experts.

Our October speaker was our own member, Ken Spargo – the Accidental Author. Ken is the writer of many books – Stumped, Double Bougey and a series about Davidia.

The November speaker is planned to be Peter Smith of television fame.

All Welcome

On behalf of the Committee of this great Probus Group, I wish all readers a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

OCTOBER 2024

THE PROBUS CLUB OF MITCHAM NUNAWADING Inc

Our Club has had an exciting two months since appearing in the July issue of Eastsider News.

Sunday lunches have always been a highlight and very well attended. July was Christmas in July at the Box Hill Golf Club where we all enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner including ‘plum pud’ and custard.

August was at the Warran Glen Nursery and Café in Warrandyte. Extra time there was enjoyed wandering around the nursery and many members purchased plants for their homes.

Outings included a guided tour of the Melbourne Town Hall, which included the council chambers, the auditorium, the Melbourne Room, the Portico and other areas. Many stories were told along the way. Since our introduction in the July issue of Eastsider News, the members have enjoyed several activities.

The film group saw films at the Balwyn Cinema - ‘The Way, My Way’ and ‘Fly me to the Moon’. Both were thoroughly enjoyed.

Each film was followed by lunch at a restaurant across the road.

Sunday lunches have been well attended and enjoyed at the Doncaster Hotel and the Warren Glen Nursery and Cafe. Food is always a draw card for members.

Outings included the Victoria Police Museum, the Melbourne Town Hall and the Duldig Museum and Sculpture Garden in Malvern.

Speakers, as usual were varied but most interesting. Yvonne Poker, affectionately known as the Gadget Girl, displayed a multitude of ‘gadgets’, to make your life easier - from tube squeezers, a pick up stick which she could retrieve a pill from the floor without bending, to a facial hair remover, big eyed needles, mattress lifters, to an umbrella to wear on your head to leave your hands free for shopping.

August speaker was Sue Harbottle, (nee McKenzie) former Olympic swimmer and November speaker is planned to be our own member, Ken Spargo, the accidental author.

The photography group spent a day wandering around Yarraville and August outing was to St Kilda and all it has to offer. Many photos were taken and a lot of walking around St Kilda gave them their daily exercise as well.

Readers are most welcome to come along to our meetings, the Monday morning coffee at Gourmet Girl in Laburnum, or any other outing which might be of interest to you.
