AVOIDING SCAMS
‘SPOT A SCAM’
Webinar conducted by the E-Safety Commission for Probus Sth Pacific Ltd on 29/8/24
……………..
The Commission is the Federal Government regulator for on-line safety.
They provide a range of free training / information modules on this topic through their Be-Connected website (www.beconnected.esafety.gov.au); across topics like scams from investments, travel apps, and online shopping: and safe use of iphones, email and banking.
Main Types of Scams arise from …
- Contact supposedly from trusted organisations; eg the ATO, banks.
- Claims of missed parcel deliveries, bills not paid
- Service provider alerts; eg ‘your linkt account has expired’.
- Friendship / romance connections
- Promise of unclaimed monies / ‘update your personal details’.
- Investment schemes
Seniors are at Risk because …
- We are more trusting
- We’re likely to have spare funds
- We have landlines, that are called randomly by scammers
How to Reduce the Risk of being Scammed.
- Don’t reply to people talking about ‘financial troubles or opportunities’.
- Ignore pop-ups on your screen
- Don’t click to open or sign-in to an unknown contact
- Don’t provide contact or personal details
- Ring to confirm with any ‘trusted organisation’
- Check for unusual sender email addresses, spelling mistakes.
Who to Contact if You’re Concerned
- Scamwatch
- ReportCyber
- Aust Signals Directorate
- ATO scam hotline; 1800 008540
- Idcare.org if your data is compromised

Scams
We have heard that a Club Member has received an email purportedly from another Member that seems to clearly be a scam.
Avoiding a scam email or sms has been in the news lately, and the simplest advice for dealing with this comes from the Australian Cyber Security Centre; Click here to see advice: Scam Advice.
We will work with Michael, our web administrator, to see if there are any measures we can / should take. In the meantime, please keep confidential the password that limits access to sections of our Club information on the Club’s website.
Please also generally take care.

Help needed
Dear Members,
So far nobody has put their hand up for the job of sourcing guest speakers for the 2024/2025 Probus year, so it looks like I’ll be doing the job next year.
That’s fine by me but I’ll need some help from the floor since I’ve used up many of my contacts and leads over recent years, right now I can do with some help from everybody.
If you know a good speaker, have heard of one, or can contribute in any way please let me know, I really would appreciate your help.
Cheers
Philip

Subject: RE: Volunteering Opportunity for Probus Members
Good morning Neil,
I hope you had a great weekend. Please find information below for distribution amongst your members:
Are you friendly and enjoy having a chat? We need you!
As a volunteer, your role is to have a friendly chat with people who make contact on the telephone, talking about everyday topics. Loneliness has been linked to a range of physical and mental health concerns. Just talking to our wonderful volunteers for a short time helps our callers feel less lonely and makes it easier for them to cope. Note: this is not a crisis intervention or counselling service.
Volunteers will be provided support and training.
You will answer incoming calls via a computer in one of our offices and have a friendly chat with people as well as completing simple data entry tasks online during your shift.
Some of the skills and qualities we are looking for:
* Excellent communication skills and emotional intelligence
* Previous volunteer experience is desirable but not necessary
* Experience or willingness to learn about community organisations
* Basic IT proficiency
* National Police record check (to be completed through Friends for Good)
* Adhere to and promote the values and mission of Friends for Good
* Commitment to volunteering
NOTE: This role requires a commitment of one shift (2-3 hours) per week for at least six months, please do not apply for the role if you cannot commit to this, as we use considerable resources to recruit and train volunteers.
To apply, please follow this link: http://bttr.im/gzmei
More information about Friends for Good can be found here: Friends for Good | Not-for-profit organisation and Australian loneliness charity | Coordinating FriendLine, Research Reports and National Conferences | Donate today | Home | Friends For Good
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Kind regards,
Meg Vincent (she/her) Volunteer Coordinator Part-Time |

Subject: Making contact
Hello,
I’m Liz, Community Development Coordinator at Brunswick Salvos (the old Citadel in Albert St), where we provide support, connection and belonging for vulnerable community members.
We are on the look-out for a couple of volunteers with great people skills and administration skills to help on our Reception desk.
I’m getting in touch to ask if there is an opportunity to promote this to your members. We felt Probus members would be the sort of people with the rights skills and experience as well as values that would be perfect for this role.
Is it possible to place a call-out in your newsletter, or via email/social media to see whether any members may be interested?
If so, please let me know and I will send you more details about the volunteer role 😊
Kind regards, |
