COLAC HERALD REPORT OF FLEMINGTON VISIT

TRACKSIDE: Probus Club of Colac members and their guests admired the walking track at

Flemington Racecourse ahead of the Melbourne Cup.

Probus Club of Colac members and their guests have visited Flemington Racecourse for an up-close view of the track ahead of the Melbourne Cup. Club secretary Jim O'Brien said about 50 club members and their guests toured the racecourse's stands, starting stalls, and saddling enclosure and visited the rose gardens, which were in flower for the Spring Racing Carnival.

The club provides activities and companionship for aged, semi-retired and retired people. -.We visited the Makybe Diva statue on the lawns in front of the big new stand and we had a look in the $l28-million new feature," Mr O'Brien said.

The group also saw Bart Cummings' extensive trophy collection at Saintly Place, a general-admission area overlooking Flemington's winning post, and learned about the Melbourne Cup's history at the Australian Racing Museum.

Mr O'Brien, had a 16- year bookmaker career in southwest Victoria, has previously attended the Melbourne Cup, but said he organised the event for others yet to visit the racecourse.

'A lot of our members are not racing orientated; it was good to let them see what happens and just what an amazing place Flemington is," Mr O'Brien said.

"We took a guest, Leanne Cole, and she has wanted to go to Flemington all her life and it was really one of the highlights for me as organiser to see someone enjoy the day so much.

"It's a huge set up; I think there's 250 acres on the course. It's something that if people haven't seen it, it's well worth them knowing about."
