How to watch movies, TV and sports online

Streaming has changed the way we watch television significantly, offering instant access to thousands of shows, series, movies and live events all without needing traditional broadcast or cable services. For many seniors, diving into the world of online streaming can feel a little daunting at first. But with a few simple tips, you can be enjoying your favourite entertainment with just the click of a finger.

What is streaming?

Streaming means watching video content over the internet, rather than downloading it or tuning in via a TV antenna. It works on smart TVs, tablets, computers and even mobile phones. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, you can stream anytime, anywhere.

How to get started

  1. Choose your device: A smart TV is the simplest way to stream. It connects to the internet and lets you use streaming apps like Netflix or ABC iview directly. If you don’t have a smart TV, you can use a streaming device (like Chromecast, Apple TV or Amazon Fire Stick) to turn your regular TV into one.
  2. Pick a service: There are many streaming platforms available. Free options include ABC iview, SBS On Demand and 7plus, offering catch-up TV and your favourite regular programs. Paid services like Netflix, Stan, Disney+, Prime Video and Kayo (for sports) require a monthly subscription.
  3. Create an account: Once you choose a service, you’ll need to sign up with your email address and set a password. If it’s a paid service, you’ll also need to enter payment details – but most offer free trials.
  4. Start watching: After logging in, you can browse by genre, search for specific shows or get personalised recommendations.

Helpful tips

  • Use subtitles if you find dialogue hard to hear – most services offer them.
  • You can pause, rewind and fast-forward just like a DVD.
  • Set up ‘watchlists’ to save shows for later.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Grandchildren, neighbours or your local library’s tech support may be able to help you set up or show you how it all works. Many communities also offer digital literacy classes for seniors.

Streaming offers endless entertainment at your fingertips. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder how you ever watched TV the old way!
