The First Probus Club in the Southern Hemisphere

The first Probus Club was formed in England at Caterham, Surrey in 1967. The word “Probus” was coined from the words “professional” and “business” and the movement has evolved to become a means by which retired people may meet together for fellowship, education, outings and other social gatherings. Probus is not a service club, is non sectarian and non political.

In 1973 Gordon Roatz visited a club in Scotland and on his return to New Zealand initiated a Probus Club in the district. The first meeting was held on 5th November 1974. This made it the first Probus Club started in the Southern Hemisphere, slightly ahead of Australia, South Africa, Argentina and elsewhere.

Membership numbers have varied over the years, peaking in excess of 200 in the early 1990’s. Current membership sits at just over 100.

The constitution was adopted in mid-1982 and the club became an incorporated society in 1999.

The meeting location has moved around the district, settling on the current location in Ocean Road, Paraparaumu in August 2015.

As numbers grew many other clubs have been formed with around 12 clubs now on the Kapiti Coast.

We are looking forward to celebrating our Golden Jubilee in November 2024 when a large celebration is being planned at Southwards, Paraparaumu.
