Probus Walk – Prospect Reservoir Canal Walk – 8th October 2019  (WALK or RIDE)

This walk is interesting and is unlike any other walk we have done.  It is not a round trip as we will have to walk in and out along the same path.  It is an easy 4km walk into the Prospect Reservoir picnic area and then a 4km walk back along the same path to the cars.

We follow along part of the original open water canal which carried our drinking water from Prospect Reservoir to the Sydney Water Pipehead at Guildford.  The water canal scheme was completed by 1888.  August 2003 saw the canal closed and re-opened to the community with a cycleway/walkway running it's full length, (we will walk only a part of it.).  At times it is below ground level and at times it is elevated above the country side.

We should arrive at a nice setting for either morning tea or an early lunch, (BYO lunch or snacks) at the Prospect Reservoir lower car park, picnic area and toilets at about 11am.  For those who are keen, they can walk up to the Prospect Reservoir and check out the old structures.

For those who would like to ride their bikes along the pathway, they can start at any point where they can access the canal, for example at Josephine Street, Merrylands West for a 6.5km ride each way.

MEETING PLACE:  The southern end TAYLOR Road, Greystanes.

An amazing feature of the walk is the aqueduct SIPHON system.  In 1892 the parapet walls of the aqueduct failed, falling into the creek below.  The aqueduct was by-passed in 1907 with the construction of the inverted syphon.
