30th anniversary luncheon
18 Jun 2014
Burnside Probus celebrated the club’s 30th anniversary with a delightful luncheon filled with fellowship, fun and of course, food.
The venue, Southern Cross’ delightful formal dining room —The Waterford — was instantly welcoming, especially the provision of a glass of champagne or wine served by smiling staff.
The palpable feeling of fellowship was definitely felt by everyone in attendance. This was not so surprising, given that the male component were all Burnside Probians who enjoy each other’s company anyway, but the pleasure was multiplied and made all the more enjoyable by the presence of the ladies — wives, partners and friends — who dug out their fineries and looked lovely.
It was wonderful to see everyone chatting away at the tables.
The real fun and the highlight of the lunch was provided by a group of fellow travellers, who go by the name of Mixed Pickles. The group delighted members by rendering a collection of original and familiar poems. Their act — Definitely not Shakespeare— was funny, daring and colloquial, with just a hint of the old country, complete with accents to match. The audience loved it.
Like all poetry, the art of presentation is in the delivery and diction and, on both counts, the Mixed Pickles group can hold their collective heads up high.
Then there was the food! Two choices of every course, beautifully cooked and presented.
At the close of the lunch, Vice President John Cheesman, who did such an excellent job of organising the event, graciously thanked the management, cooks and staff. President Greg Stevens, in turn, thanked John for his effort, an expression responded to with acclamation by all present. All in all, it was a most enjoyable day.
