How assisted driving technology can protect you and your car
22 Jan 2025
Technology has come a long way in improving vehicle safety – here’s how it can help you reduce your risk of accident.
Safety features are one of the most important things to consider when buying a new car. Along with ensuring your new car has a good Australasian New Car Assessment (ANCAP) rating, there’s a range of assisted driving technologies that can also help reduce your accident risk.
Some of the key electronic driver assist systems that now come as standard on most new vehicles include:
- Adaptive cruise control: When activated, it will automatically brake or accelerate with traffic to suit the conditions. This is a big improvement on earlier cruise control systems where you had to manually adjust to changing speed changes.
- Active lane centering: Lane support systems can detect lane markings, alerting the driver when the vehicle comes too close to the boundary. In some cases, they can steer the vehicle away from the boundary.
- Blind spot sensors: When another driver is in your blind spot and you action a lane change, the blind spot sensor will alert you – typically with a light that activates near the driver’s door.
- Braking systems: If an object is close in your vehicle’s path, the emergency brake assist will sound a warning and automatically reduce the speed if you don’t respond. Anti-lock braking systems will prevent tyres from skidding when braking heavily or in slippery conditions.
While these systems are designed to assist the driver, they are not a driver replacement. If you drive dangerously, they won’t prevent you from losing control or crashing.
Do I still need Car Insurance?
While driver assist systems may help reduce accident risk, it won’t prevent them completely – which is why you may want to consider getting an appropriate level of car insurance.
