Medicare online
20 Aug 2013
Too busy to head to Medicare and wait there for hours on end just to claim your money back? Lodge your claims online.
To lodge a claim online, you must be registered for Medicare Online Services.
Head to the Human Services website. The first step is to create a myGov account.
You’ll need your Medicare card to sign up. When claiming, you’ll need your doctors receipt as well.
MyGov
In the top left corner of the Human Services website, there’s a ‘Customer online services’ option. Select ‘Register’.
Once you’re through to the registration page, there is a handy video and some step-by-step instructions for how to create an account.
Medicare online
Once you’ve created an account, head back to the Human Services homepage and scroll down to where it says ‘Medicare’. You’ll have four options:
- Payment finder
- Medicare services
- Claiming options
- Self service
To claim online, you’ll have to choose ‘Self service’ and log in using your myGov username and password.
Click on ‘Services’. You’ll be taken to a screen where you can link the services you’d like to access when you log in to the Human Services website.
- For our purposes, just link ‘Medicare’ for now by clicking on the green link button at the end of the ‘Medicare’ line.
- Then click on the word ‘Medicare’.
- You’ll be taken to a general screen. At the bottom, there should be a linked phrase ‘Proceed to Online Services’.
- Once you’ve clicked the link, you’ll be taken to another page with several menu options on the side and four boxes.
Bank details
The first thing you’ll have to do is input your bank details. These will be stored on the secure site so you don’t have to enter them time and time again.
You’ll need your BSB, Account number and the name of the account holder.
Then just hit ‘Submit’.
Select ‘Home’ in the side menu to go back to the Online Services homepage.
Lodging a claim
Select ‘Lodge a claim’ under the Medicare heading.
- Scroll down to the bottom and enter the ‘item number’ of your receipt to see whether that particular service can be claimed online.
- Once it’s approved, just hit ‘Start claim’.
- Select the patient who the claim is for (they must be listed on your Medicare card) and answer whether the account has been paid in full. Then hit ‘Next’.
- Enter the provider number of your doctor – this is found on the receipt – then hit ‘Next’.
- On the next screen, just fill out the details, as the form requires.
- You’ll then be taken to a claim summary.
And you’re done. The money will be placed into your bank account and you’ll be able to print a record of the claim for you to keep.
You can also see your claim history online and change any personal details whenever you need.
