Living the stream

Television is more than just what’s on the screen. You can access thousands of shows, movies and documentaries on demand.

It’s the ‘golden age of TV’. And while there’s so much to watch on free to air television, it’s the streaming services where the big shows live. But don’t worry, streaming services can be free or subscription based, so if you don’t want to fork out the cash, you won’t miss out on everything.

What are streaming services?

Instead of operating through a traditional TV programming, TV shows, movies and documentaries are available online. Unlike traditional downloads, you don’t have to wait for an entire file to download before you start watching, making streaming fast and easy.

Why use streaming services?

Streaming services allow you to watch your favourite shows and movies anytime, anywhere. Most platforms, including Netflix, Stan, ABC iViewer and Foxtel Go can be viewed online, using an app, or on Apple TV. Alternatively, if you have a new smart television, you may find you can access streaming services, especially those that are free, through the TV.

Which service is right for you?

There are a variety of services available. ABC iView and SBS are available for free, either through a downloadable app or online.

By going on the app or online, you can catch up on your favourite shows and watch exclusive programs that are only available online. Netflix and Stan operate on a subscription model. For a small monthly fee, you have access to hundreds of TV shows, movies and documentaries. Each platform has different content available, so when deciding which service is right for you, it’s worth going online and checking out which service is more appealing to your tastes. Unlike free services, the subscription platforms are ad free. For Foxtel users, the Foxtel Go app is free, and gives you access to any of the movies and TV shows that air on Foxtel channels.
