Stay safe with emergency alert safety apps

Emergency alert safety apps are transforming the way we manage our wellbeing by providing quick and efficient access to help during emergencies.

The apps offer immediate communication with caregivers, family members, or emergency services at the touch of a button, enhancing your sense of security and independence.

With features like GPS tracking and personalised emergency response plans, emergency alert apps ensure rapid assistance when needed, whether for medical emergencies or unforeseen situations.

Here, we look at five app options designed to offer security and peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that help is only a tap away.

1. Emergency Plus

Developed by Australia's emergency services and their government and industry partners, Emergency Plus is an essential app that provides accurate location information when calling emergency services. It provides you with your GPS coordinates, which can be crucial in situations where you may not know your exact location or are unable to communicate it effectively.

2. My SOS Family

My SOS Family is a community-powered emergency SOS and mobile response app for when you’re alone. The app is designed to provide instant access to emergency contacts and alert them in times of distress.

It allows users to create a list of trusted contacts such as family members, friends, or neighbours, who can be reached quickly during emergencies. Alerts are triggered by simply tapping a button or speaking to your smart speaker or phone. The alert system will immediately call and text your emergency contacts simultaneously, alerting them to your need for assistance, with your location and message, photo, video and recording.

The app includes GPS functionality to pinpoint your location, aiding responders or contacts in reaching you quickly.

Designed with ease of use in mind, the app has a straightforward interface for quick access to emergency functions, suitable for seniors and anyone needing straightforward emergency assistance.

3. GoodSAM

GoodSAM (Smartphone Activated Medics) connects trained responders, including off-duty medical professionals and nearby volunteers, with individuals in need of urgent medical assistance. The app uses GPS to alert responders to nearby emergencies, providing immediate support until professional help arrives. GoodSAM is particularly beneficial in medical emergencies where quick intervention can make a significant difference.

4. Leelou

Leelou is a personal safety app that can have up to five trusted contacts referred to as ‘Guardians’ who will be notified when you press the SOS button. Once activated, the app sends your GPS coordinates, as well as a live audio stream to your elected Guardians, and will override any silencing functions they may have set on their phone.

Leelou will even attempt to connect you to local emergency services via satellite in places where phone coverage is not available, so you can enjoy added security. It is also completely free with no subscription fees.

5. Life360

Life360 is Australia's leading family safety and location-sharing app, allowing you to share information with the whole family and keep everyone in the loop.

The app runs in the background and lets those within the family circle know when you arrive or leave predetermined locations as well as tracking general movement. Location data can also be used to navigate directly to family members if needed.

The app also includes a panic button feature that allows you to quickly alert your designated emergency contacts with your location when immediate help is needed.
