SRI LANKA – “PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN”

If golden beaches, misty mountains, mighty elephants, stealthy leopards, an ancient and majestic past, lovely tea and warm smiles could sum up a country that would be Sri Lanka.

With many sites and scenes bottled up into a small island, a traveller could be viewing Sigiriya, declared by UNESCO as the Eighth Wonder of the World, in the dawn and sampling this countries spicy food, exotic fruits and array of sweetmeats found nowhere else in the world at dusk.

Here are a few of the spectacular and historical sites this country has to offer:

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: See elephants at close range, in a natural setting bathing in the Maha Oya River.

ANCIENT CEYLON - THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE CITY OF ANURADHAPURA:
Re-founded in 4th Century BC, Anuradhapura became the capital of Ceylon and the sacred city of Buddhism, home to the most renowned relic, the sacred Bodhi tree.

MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK: Experience an Elephant and Wildlife Jeep Safari.

ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS OF PEREDENIYA: Enjoy a guided stroll through the lush gardens. Established in 1821 and now cover 140 acres, snuggled in a loop in the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka.

RAMBODA FALLS AND LABOOKELLIE TEA CENTRE: Ramboda falls is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. After taking in the spectacular views, continue on a scenic drive through the tea county before arriving at the Labookellie Tea Centre for a short factory tour and cuppa in the tearooms.

YALA NATIONAL PARK: Enjoy a Jeep Safari accompanied by a naturalist guide and spot the elusive leopard (the park has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world), as well as the Sloth Bear, Crocodiles and the Asian Elephant.
