We ask some seasoned travellers about how to travel smarter. This issue: Fern Speechley, marketing executive at Gate 1 Travel.
Here are five great money-saving tips to help make your dreams a reality!
1 Book early
By planning ahead you’ll often be rewarded with reduced travel prices. Early-bird airfares normally release around September for the following year and tour companies usually follow suit.
2 Sign up for deals
Subscribing to travel e-newsletters is a great way to find out about the best deals.
3 Pre-book as much as you can
By booking your travel arrangements before you depart, you can save by paying in Australian dollars and avoiding currency conversion fees.
4 Get a group together
When a group of family or friends travel together, it often reduces the overall cost. At Gate 1 Travel, if you bring 10 companions on your tour or cruise, the 11th traveller earns free land services.
5 Pick a few destinations and travel slowly
Spend more time in fewer places to cut transit costs. Not only will this help your budget, but you’ll also be able to get a more in-depth experience and understanding of a region.
Travel smarter
- To maximise space, roll your clothes instead of folding them.
- Remember to pack garbage bags so you can separate dirty clothes from clean clothes in your luggage.
- Make a packing list, and then cull a third of it! Be ruthless. This way you’ll have extra room for souvenirs and new clothes bought on holiday.
- Pack a universal adapter instead of an adapter that is only suited for the country you’re visiting. It’ll save you money and will come in handy for airport layovers.
- Don’t forget to pack ear-plugs in your carry on
