We have had some amazing Guest Speaker and we look forward to Janet procurring many more into the future.
2024 - Guest Speakers
Our guest speaker at our February meeting was Judith Frederick. Her talk was titled “The A-Z of Galapagos”. What a great session (with photos) we had in February with Judith Dickinson, who took usfrom the A to Z of the Galapagos Island creatures, plus the beautiful scenery of the area. Judy is certainly a great photographer, and her accompanying commentary on the history was really interesting.
In March Robert Asselman lead us through the pros and cons of owning an electrice vehicle. Robert, is anenthusiast and provided information including comparative costs, waiting time for new vehicles, availability of recharge pointsthroughout the country - a common worry for those who tend to drive long distances. Not everything we see and hear in the media is fact, as we all know, but Robert addressed some of the rumours, the myths, thegeneral concerns of the public regarding EVs.
Our April speaker, IanCrawford, nephew of Hector, whose entire family formed the company, took RLPC members on atrip down memory lane as he listed his experiences and the Crawford shows - Division Four, Number96, The Box, Homicide, The Sullivans, to name just a few. Ian started at the very bottom as a deliveryboy, worked his way through positions as cameraman (assigned to Graham Kennedy's camera for InMelbourne Tonight), production assistant and eventually General Manager for Crawfords.Afterthought: Number 96 and The Box were perhaps a little too risque for the younger familymembers, but they/we probably sneaked a look at some episodes.Yet another great speaker.
Below are just a few from 2022/3
Historian Gerry Robinson took us on a journey through Ringwood and its surrounds. From the original geology of the area, through the geography and the impact of settlement on the land and subsequent historical events. He provided an entertaining and thought provoking snapshot of the region we live in.
Judy Frederick provided an interesting account of her trip to the Antarctic. Many photos on the nature and habitat of Antarctica were shown with personal stories connected to these. All members found her talk very interesting and educational! The photographs were spectacular!
Shona and Jordan from Home Instead gave a very informative and thought provoking talk and had lots of member's questions answered. Home Instead is an Australian wide franchised organisation that specialises in providing services to support ageing adults in living comfortably and independently in their own homes. Shona was a very good speaker and related well to our members.
Lorraine Smith: The Journey of a Lost Manuscript
One day a 16th century parchment was found in Lorraine’s bookshop and her research into it is the subject of her talk today. Her book ‘Journey of a Lost Manuscript’ is her third foray in writing non-fiction, having written her family history in 2013 and co-written ‘Warrnambool, a Photographic View’ with Neil in 2015. It was a fascinating talk!
