The club was established in May 1986 under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Newcastle with 51 foundation members. It quickly grew to over 100 members during that year. The first president wa Joan May, vice-president Chris Anderson, secretary Jean Maddison and treasurer Margaret Curran. The club was incorporated on 11th July 1995
