Levin Probus Club Marks 30 Years of Friendship and Fun

The Levin Combined Probus Club has celebrated 30 years of friendship, fellowship, and fun, three decades since its inaugural meeting on October 3, 1995.

Members gathered to mark the milestone, reflecting on the Club's rich history and induring sense of community. A speech written by past president and current historian Bill Hinkley, who was unable to attend, was read by past president Graeme Gore during the celebration.

Hinkley's address paid tribute to the Club's founding members and those who have kept its spirit alive over the years. The first president, John Lancaster, was invested by Bernie Wanden, then president of the Levin Rotary Club, at the inaugural meeting in 1995.

While foundation members June Dickie and John McLaren were still part of the Club at its 25th anniversary, this year's longest serving member is Catherine Campbell who joined in 2002, followed by Avis and Robin Barrie in 2003. Gore who joined in 2008, remains the club's longest serving past president.

True to its motto, "Friendship, Fellowship and Fun" the club continues to thrive with monthly meetings, coffee mornings, film outings, a writing group, and regular trips, often punctuated by good food and laughter.

Hinkley recalled one memorable bus trip that began with a blown tyre but ended in success thanks to quick thinking and a hearty lunch, a story that perfectly captured the club's resilient and good-humoured spirit.

As members raised a toast to 30 years, they celebrated not just longevity, but the friendships that have grown along the way. "Our club has its own unique way of doing things" Hinkley said in his speech. "It has suited us very well, and long may it continue."
