Club History
The first Probus Club was formed in England at Caterham, Surrey in 1967. The word “Probus” was coined from the words “professional” and “business” and the movement has evolved to become a means by which retired people may meet together for fellowship, education, outings and other social gatherings. Probus is not a service club, is non sectarian and non political.
In 1973 Gordon Roatz visited a club in Scotland and on his return to New Zealand initiated a Probus Club of Kapiti Coast. This was the first Probus Club started in the Southern Hemisphere, slightly ahead of Australia, South Africa, Argentina and elsewhere.
Our Club
A Rotarian, Kevin Browne, started our club in July 2000. Kevin saw a need for a combined gender club and so the Combined Probus Club of Jervis Bay & Districts was formed. The first meeting took place on 21st July 2000 in the Meriton St Community Hall. He chose a very active community minded female Rotarian, Jean Smith, as the first President. Bert Lawton was the first Secretary, a position he held for many years. Bert was also the first Life Member. Kevin was the newsletter editor and temporarily called the newsletter "The Blurb" for want of a better name. It is a perfect name and hence stays.
Foundation Members that are still in the club today are:
- Sylvia Browne
- Joyce/John Daniell
- Maggie/Michael Drew
- Gina/Ken Jones
- Joyce/Clive Mueller
