At our September 2025 meeting, we had the pleasure of listening to Frank Miller and Jim Coombe from the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron. Together Frank and Jim explained the roles undertaken at the squadron and their importance in running patrols, rescue operations, manning radios and providing marine safety courses.

 

At our August 2025 meeting, we were entertained by three of our members as guest speakers, who took us back to earlier times in their lives.

Don Johnson talked about his outback adventures in Birdsville, Boulia, Alice Springs, Chambers Pillar, Lambert Centre and along the Oodnadatta Track.

George Oram talked about his working life on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, especially his work with the local indigenous people.

Jerry Vallance talk was titled “Rake’s Progress”, about the village he was born in, the three breweries he worked and his reason for coming to Australia.

 

For our July 2025 meeting we listened to David Buxton as he talked about his yachting adventures which climaxed in his participation in the 2024 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.  David had the audience spellbound as he relived the experiences of this epic challenge, it was certainly a once in a lifetime experience especially at the age of 71.

 

At our June 2025 meeting we were enthralled by Kate Clements talking about her adventures flying 12,000 miles from Edinburgh Scotland to Parafield in South Australia in 1968.

 

In May 2025 the Club's special quest speaker was Rob Morrison who talk about “Ageing Disgracefully".  Rob talked about the Government’s Ageing Plan for South Australia. Rob then provided a light-hearted view of the subject with humorous slides and stories that had our members laughing with delight.

 

Also at our May 2025 meeting, our resident poet (member John Whitman) read one of his poems which was very humorous as well as being a reminder to look after our health. "ANATOMY OF A COLONOSCOPY"

 

The Club’s special guest speaker for April 2025 was Shane McCann who topic was ‘Bat Talk’.  We were very informed and educated by Shane on the importance, the myths, the facts and the incredible lives of the Grey-headed Flying-foxes of Adelaide.  Shane is a rescuer, rehabilitator, hotline operator and educator of Flying-foxes.

 

At our March 2025 meeting Brian Nankivell was inducted to the Club.  Brian was sponsored by member Barry Herbert.  Welcome Brian to the Probus Club of Flagstaff Hill (Men).

 

After the general meeting, the Club held its AGM.  Tim Magor was elected and inducted as the Club’s new PresidentBryan O’Shaughnessy was elected as Vice President and TreasurerDarrell Wise was elected as Secretary.  Congratulations to all and the other members of the Management Committee for 2025/26.

 Our speakers were Club members Dennis Wood who spoke about “My wartime and after childhood”, his unique experiences in England as a lad during WW2 and Don Johnson who spoke about the ”Mallee Emu Wrens”, his involvement in a project to save these small rare birds from extinction.

 

 

In February 2025 the Club inducted a new member Grant Tilley.  Welcome Grant to our Club.

The speaker for February 2025 was Capt. Allan Boman whose topic was The River Murray and The P.S. Marion.  Allan spoke about the history of the Murray River from its discovery in 1824 through to its development as a freight highway.  He also highlighted the P.S. Marion chequed history from its launch in 1897 through to the National Trust buying it in 1963 as a static museum.  The paddle steamer was restored in the 1980s and recommissioned in 1994.  The P.S. Marion is now a regular service paddle steamer cruising the River Murray.

 

In January 2025 Club members Tim Magor and Darrell Wise were our guest speakers.  Tim spoke about his recent trip to Singapore while Darrell spoke about his trip to Africa.

At the December 2024 meeting, the Club celebrated its 41st Birthday.  To mark this special occasion, the Club had several special visitors at the meeting, including Erin Thompson (State Local MP), Amanda Rishworth (Federal Local MP), Jenni Law (Probus District Chairperson) and Probus Club representatives from the neighbouring clubs, Max Murrie (President, Marion), Tony Phillips (President, Hawthorndene), Janice Paget (President, Happy Valley), , Margaret Mudge (President, St. Marys) and many club members’ partners.

During the meeting, our member Jonathan Roberts was presented by Amanda Rishworth, Federal Local MP with a Volunteer Community Services Award for Jonathan’s many many years of services to the community.  Jonathan’s two daughters also attended the award ceremony, to see him received the award.  A nice surprise for Jonathan.  Congratulations Jonathan, well done.
