Probus History
The Probus association had its origins with two forerunners - both in the UK and both established by Rotary Clubs. The first was known as the Campus Club formed in 1965. The second was named the Probus Club for the 'PRO' in professional and the 'BUS' in business. Both clubs were formed to meet the need for companionship of their peers and mental stimulation for retired business and professional men.
Since then Probus has spread to 23 countries around the world.
Probus was founded in Australia with the formation of the Probus Club of Hunters Hill in NSW on 3 February 1976. Since then Probus has grown into a network of social clubs that bring people together through shared interests and regular activities. Today, Probus supports more than 90,000 members across 1300 clubs throughout Australia with each club reflecting the unique character of its local community.
The Probus philosophy – Fun and Friendship in Retirement – lives on.
