A pleasant trip to the Government House
18 Sep 2024
Levin Combined Probus Club had a pleasant trip to the Government House recently.
Upon entry, two smiling guides were waiting for them, and they were then divided into two groups. They were treated to a lovely tour that provided history, humour and an insight into the lives of many Governor Generals and their families through the years.
Of particular interest were the chairs in the dining room and hallway. The tapestry and backs of these chairs were worked on by members of the Country Women’s Institute from all around the country in the 1950s.
The Clubs very talented member, Alison, was given the honour of being allowed to play a couple beautiful classical pieces on the piano in the Government House. It was quite emotional, and she did the Club proud.
The group then proceeded to a nearby café for an enjoyable lunch, before making their way to Katherine Mansfield House. Katherine, a prominent New Zealand author, was born there and lived there for the first part of her life. The family home was built in the 1880’s and Club members appreciated the work done to restore the house to the era it was built in.
A great day in superb company.
