Are you ready for flu season?

It’s almost that time of year again, so we’ve got some handy advice to help you avoid the flu without spending the season indoors.

Our health experts are warning us we could be in for a bad flu season this year, after two years of Covid pandemic restrictions have largely kept serious flu outbreaks at bay. Influenza is a serious infectious disease, so now more than ever it’s a good idea for you and your loved ones to put some trusted flu prevention strategies in place.

THE BEST SHOT AT PREVENTION

It’s time to book your annual Influenza vaccine, which is readily available from your G.P. and many chemists under the National Immunisation Program. The flu strains change each year, so it’s important you receive the tailored vaccine, especially if you are over 65 or have underlying health conditions such as heart disease or chronic respiratory conditions. The vaccine is free for these groups so roll up your sleeve because the flu shot is your singular best flu prevention tool.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It’s no secret that your immune system is better able to fight off infections if it’s fuelled by a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit and veg, as well as lean meats, low-fat dairy, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Focus on reducing processed foods and load up on those important vitamins and minerals that give your body the best fighting chance of avoiding the flu and its potential complications.

GOOD HYGIENE PRACTICE IS NOT JUST FOR COVID

The Influenza virus is a highly contagious upper respiratory disease which can spread to others easily when we cough, sneeze or even talk. Practice good hygiene throughout the season, by washing hands regularly with soap and water, cleaning surfaces such as door handles and keyboards, and using tissues when sneezing and coughing. Try to maintain adequate ventilation whether at home or your holiday accommodation, and avoid others as much as possible if you suspect the flu.

EXERCISE AND SLEEP ARE YOUR FRIENDS

Regular exercise is not only important for your physical and mental wellbeing, it primes your body to fight illness and infection. Don’t let the cooler weather put you off getting fresh air and enjoying the outdoors. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do, but remember to stay well hydrated. A focus on good sleep habits is important too. A good night’s sleep supports your immune system, while poor sleep can leave you more susceptible to catching the flu and other illnesses.

GET SOME RELIEF

Be prepared for flu season with a good supply of pain relief such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, as well as decongestants, cough syrup and antihistamines. If you are unlucky enough to get the flu, you could expect a range of symptoms such as runny nose, coughs, body aches, fever and fatigue. Ensure your prescription medicines are on hand should you be forced to lay low for a few days or even longer. You may also want to stock up on tissues, hand soap and sanitiser.

With adequate rest and plenty of fluids the flu will hopefully run its course, but don’t hesitate to speak to your doctor if you have any concerns about your symptoms or recovery.
