The Classics Museum
05 Aug 2013
Twenty members and partners from the Hobart Probus Men's Club visited the University of Tasmania to view examples of ancient art and culture from Egypt, Greece and Rome. They were hosted by Neil Apted.
The collection contains approximately 800 pieces, with new additions being purchased or donated on a regular basis.
In 1954 the then Professor of Classics, JR Elliott, initiated the acquisition of ancient Greek vases with a view to creating a collection of original antiquities and also serve as a teaching aid for the courses conducted at the university.
It now also serves primary and secondary schools as well as the public in general.
After the visit, lunch was enjoyed at the University Club.
