Sun, surf and loads of culture

The most remote city of its size in the world, Honolulu is the main gateway to Hawaii and a major hub for international travel, business and military defense. It’s also a cultural paradise filled with a diverse variety of Pacific culture, cuisine and traditions.

The city is most famous for two things: Pearl Harbour and Waikiki Beach.

Hawaii time

Everything is slow in Hawaii. But that’s what you’re there for right? A peaceful, relaxing holiday in the sun. Waikiki is famous for large resorts and as we wander into the Hilton Hawaiian Village, we’re taken aback by how big it actually is. While it’s vast, it’s also a good spot for families who want a bit of everything. If you want to be in the thick of things, just stay in one of the towers closest to the biggest pool, the lagoon and the beach. Want a bit of quiet but in walking distance to everything the resort has to offer? Stay in one of the back towers. It really is a win/win situation.

But be prepared, things happen slowly here. Always give yourself an extra half hour (at least), especially at the restaurants.

Beach culture

The beach, while fairly short, is very popular. Half of the main beach is actually marked off for surfers but the great thing is that the ocean is quite shallow, making it a wonderful spot to take the grandkids, plonk them at the sea shore and let the waves roll over them. Just stay close, as on windy days, the waves can be a tad forceful.

Shop up a storm

The main thoroughfare, Kalakaua Avenue is named after King Kalakaua. Take a stroll down the road and you’ll pass resort after resort, shop after shop, including most of the luxury designer brands such as Prada, Tiffany & Co, Fendi and Gucci. The other main street, Kuhio Avenue, is better known for restaurants and cafes.

But for the real shopping, head to Ala Moana Center or Waikele Premium Outlets. There are loads of deals to be had. Our top tip: only fill your suitcase half way, because we promise you, you’re coming home with clothes and shoes galore.

History lessons

While not part of Waikiki, Pearl Harbour is just a bus ride away. Wait at one of the stops of Kuhio Avenue or at the Ala Moana Center and tell the bus driver that you want to go to the Pearl Harbour Visitor Centre. A guided tour is essential, especially if you want to get the full experience. If organised in advanced, most tours will even pick you up from your hotel and drop you back at the end of the day. Whether it’s the museums, USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine, USS Missouri Battleship, Pacific Aviation Museum or a combination of them all, it’s most definitely worth a visit.

Hawaii is just a 10-hour, non-stop flight from the east coast of Australia so it’s a great overseas getaway – with sand, sea, culture and shopping all included.
