Wild weather hits Melbourne
01 Oct 2013
The State Emergency Services is preparing for a heavy workload this morning after wild weather caused chaos across Melbourne overnight.
Tens of thousands of properties have been left without power as winds of more than 140 kilometres per hour ripped through the city.
The SES said there were more than 1000 calls for help overnight, most of them for fallen trees and building damage. The number of calls is expected to rise today as people wake up and inspect the damage.
Tony Bannister from the Bureau of Meteorology says these winds have been the worst in Victoria for more than five years. The Bureau is expecting more severe weather this morning with winds of up to 110/120 kilometres per hour but not nearly as widespread as last night.
Victoria Police was forced to close part of Flinders St, between Spencer and King Streets during peak hour as a beam came loose on the 15th floor of a building, most likely due to the winds.
The Royal Botanic Gardens was also closed for the second time in a week.
