Spending time with Slim Dusty
20 Oct 2016
The Probus Club of Oxley recently enjoyed a memorable visit to the Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey. Walking from the carpark on a beautiful spring morning, members took in the beauty of the setting for this museum – the gardens were in full bloom and most eye catching of all was a magnificent golden orange rose which was out in full bloom, of course named in Slim’s honour. Shirley, a volunteer guide, met the group and led them through the front door where they were greeted by Slim with “G’day, g’day and how ya going.”
The museum’s exhibits were well presented and the group particularly liked the ‘Looking Back Timeline’, which helps you to understand the incredible story of the man whose career spanned nearly seven decades. Slim was the first Australian to have a number one international hit song with his version of A Pub with No Beer and all of his 37 Golden Guitars were on display alongside his gold records.
Another room housed objects from the Kirkpatrick family archives, including stage costumes and some of Slim’s signature hats. The club then enjoyed a light lunch of sandwiches followed by a selection of cakes. The centre is run mostly by volunteer staff and the club would like to congratulate them on their enthusiasm and dedication in perpetuating the memory of Slim Dusty, a true Australian Icon.
