Probus Club of City Beach Day Outing

Twenty members and wives had a thoroughly wonderful afternoon at the Weld Club arranged by Brian King to whom participants give thanks.

The Weld Club has a history in Perth like no other club. Being formed in 1871, only 42 years since the first settlers arrived to found the Swan River Colony. It took the name from its first patron, the then Governor of Western Australia Sir Frederick Weld.

The Club is a male bastion, a haven of refuge and accord in a world torn by strife and discord, it is a place where kindred sprits gather to make friends, it humbles the mighty, draws out the timid and casts out the sore head, and is one of the noblest inventions of mankind.

The Weld Club had many early rules, mostly taken from similar clubs in Sydney and England. One rule was, members had to pay an entrance fee of 5 pounds and an annual subscription of 1 pound and 1 shilling. No reminders were sent out, but members had to remember to pay because there was a fine of 1shilling for every day the subscription was overdue. Many other outdated rules existed, but all in line with the times of early colonization.

Today the Weld Club flourishes with well to do and well-established members of our Perth community, a place where men can relax, discuss their interests and the welfare and progress of our great state.
