Visit to the Slim Dusty Centre
16 Dec 2016
Recently members of the Probus Club of Oxley enjoyed a memorable visit to the Slim Dusty Centre located at Kempsey.
Walking from the carpark on a beautiful spring morning we were able to take in the beauty of the setting for this museum, the gardens were in full bloom and most eye catching of all was a magnificent golden orange rose which was out in full bloom, of course named in Slim’s honour.
Shirley, our volunteer guide met the group and made us most welcome. We then proceeded to the front door receiving a greeting from Slim with “G’day, G’day and how ya going”
The museum is impressive, the exhibits are well presented and I particularly liked the “Looking Back Timeline “which helps you to understand the incredible story of the man whose career spanned nearly seven decades. Slim was the first Australian to have a number one international hit song with his version of “A Pub with No Beer”. All his 37 Golden Guitars are on display along with his gold records.
Another room houses objects from the Kirkpatrick family archives, including stage costumes also on display are some of his signature hats. Slim, Joy and the kids spent many years on the road, so it was fitting to see the battered old caravan and the shiny purple Fairlane on display. An added bonus are the enjoyable movies shown in the auditorium.
We then enjoyed a light lunch of freshly made sandwiches followed by a selection of cakes and unlimited tea and coffee.
The centre is run mostly by volunteer staff, I would like to congratulate them on their enthusiasm and dedication in perpetuating the memory of Slim Dusty a true Australian Icon. The team of volunteers gave a hundred percent in their effort to make our visit so enjoyable.
“You’ve done us proud”
