Autumn is the ideal time to start cooking more warming, hearty dinners, and these wines make the perfect pairing.
With autumn ushering in cooler weather, it’s time to start cooking more warming, hearty dishes. Whether it’s soups and stews or roasts and slow-cooked meat, it’s an exciting time to bring out your favourite cosy recipes. But it’s also an opportunity to level up your flavour experience with a delicious glass of wine. If you’ve ever been unsure about which wines to pair with your culinary creation, Laithwaites Wine is here to help.
For over 50 years, Laithwaites have travelled the world looking for the best wines from smaller, often family-run producers. It’s these winemakers whose passion for their craft can be tasted in the glass, delivering maximum authenticity and flavour without the big costs.
We’re obsessed with finding the perfect wine to complement any meal, or to simply enjoy on its own, and when it comes to warming autumn dinners these are a few of our favourite combinations:
Steak and Shiraz
Ease the shift from summer to winter with a juicy, sizzling steak. Whether you’re firing up the barbecue or enjoying a cool evening indoors, you’ll want to make the most of autumn’s seasonal vegetables with some charred capsicum and cauliflower, or perhaps roasted pumpkin. But one thing’s for sure, you’ll want to keep a rich Shiraz close by. The bold, spicy intensity of Shiraz from top regions such as the Barossa and Hunter Valley make it a fantastic match for smoky, char-grilled meat and veggies. We recommend favourites like the Broke Fordwich Shiraz from Hunter Valley icons Margan or the brilliant Double Gold-medal Catch 22 Barossa Shiraz.
Lamb Shanks and Cabernet Sauvignon
It’s hard to beat slow cooked lamb shanks and mashed potato for a warming autumn feed. Getting them ready in the slow cooker and letting the aromas slowly waft through the house throughout the day, before finally sitting down and watching tender meat fall right off the bone… it’s heavenly. A rich, flavourful meal like this needs a similarly layered wine, which is where full-bodied Cabernet shines. The intensely rich notes of plum and dark berries make a wine such as John Quarisa’s three-time Gold medal-winning 30 Mile Cabernet a favourite.
Merlot and Roast Pork
If there’s one dish that gets the mouth watering when it comes time for heartier autumn meals, it’s roast pork and crackling! Salty pork and savoury roast vegetables, loaded with plenty of herbs, are crying out for a juicy Merlot. The smooth plum flavours of the velvety Caravan Merlot make it a divine match for roast pork, and an incredibly enjoyable wine to sip on its own as you’re cooking.
