The iron lady, Margaret Thatcher, has passed away at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke. Meanwhile, the Coalition’s lead has slightly narrowed in the latest Newspoll results.
Iron lady passes away
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87. The iron lady, much loved and loathed throughout Britain, suffered a stroke on Sunday night, passing away peacefully on Monday morning, British time. Thatcher was Britain’s longest-serving 20th century prime minster and, to date, is the only woman to have held the job. Following her ousting by her own party, Thatcher was appointed Baroness in the House of Lords by the Queen and made a member of the Order of the Garter. A ceremonial funeral will be held next week. Coalition leads slightly in latest Newspoll
The Coalition’s lead has narrowed slightly in the latest Newspoll with Labor’s primary vote increasing by two points to 32. The Coalition’s primary vote has dropped by two points and now sits at 48. Read more.
Mother who killed her two sons set to return to Australia
Australian Allyson McConnell, who was found guilty of the manslaughter of her two sons in Canada, will soon be returning to Australia after serving just 10 months in a hospital psychiatric ward. Scientists are warning that flights will become bumpier as global warming destabilises air currents. The atmosphere is becoming vulnerable as climate change alters the atmospheric winds with experts warning turbulences will get a lot worse in the decades ahead. Read more.
Two children dead after pit collapse
A dirt pit has collapsed in North Carolina, killing two children. Rescuers recovered the bodies of a six-year-old girl and seven-year-old boy at a home construction site after the boy’s father called 911 to report the collapse. News.com.au has the full story.
Teenager stabbed while helping girls
A teenage boy has been stabbed after coming to the aid of two girls at a Logan City park in Queensland. A 42-year-old man was allegedly assaulting the two girls when two boys tried to help them. Both were reportedly stabbed, one with serious wounds to his stomach. Read more.
Deadly bird fly outbreak in China
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for calm amid a deadly bird flu outbreak in China. The death toll stands at seven and it’s reported that more than 20 people are infected. Poultry markets have been closed and WHO plans to send a team of scientists to China. ABC News has more.
