War over for Australians

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has made a surprise visit to Afghanistan where he has declared the official end of Australia’s involvement in the war. More than 20,000 Australians have served in Afghanistan; 260 were wounded and 40 were killed in action. Troops will be home by Christmas. Read more on ABC News.

Adelaide ranked in top 10

The world’s leading travel guide, Lonely Planet, has ranked Adelaide number nine in the world’s top 10 cities to visit. The list is headed by Paris, Trinidad and Cape Town. The City of Churches ranks above the big, capital cities of Sydney and Melbourne, described as “effortlessly chic… ready to be uncorked and sampled.” Read more.

Rebekah Brooks faces trial

Rupert Murdoch’s key aide, Rebekah Brooks, is amoung eight defendants facing a jury for the first time over the phone-hacking scandal that swept Britain and sank Murdoch’s News of the World. The defendants face charges ranging from illegally hacking mobile phones to bribing public officials for stories. Seven News has the full story.

Storms sweep through Europe

At least eight people have died and thousands more are without power as the worst storm in over a decade hits northern Europe. Severe travel disruptions, and fallen powerlines and trees were all the result of hurricane-force winds and heavy rain. The last comparable storm was in 2002. ABC News has more.

Teen dies while saving lives

A teenager has died in a car crash after grabbing control of the car when his stepfather blacked out at the wheel. Christopher Alvelo managed to steer the car off the road and into a parking lot, in an attempt to save the lives of the passengers in the car and to avoid a fatal crash on the road. Unbuckled to reach the wheel, Christopher died at the scene. Read more about the teenager’s courageous act on News.com.au
