Card playing
02 Jul 2013
In July 2003, the late Barry Blaikie organised card playing groups, of six couples each, for the Booragoon Men's Probus Club.
The game chosen was already popular with several members and is known locally as 'American Canasta'. This proved very popular.
Games are hosted by group members on a rotation basis and a strict rule applies that only water is provided during play and, at its conclusion, supper must only consist of tea, coffee and biscuits. When stand-ins are required, they are invited from other groups thus ensuring a mixing of players.
More recently, Rodney and Margaret Orr introduced the game to more WA clubs and this social activity continues to grow in popularity.
In March, a combined club card afternoon was organised by Margaret and Rodney at the RAAF Association premises in Bull Creek.
The event started with an excellent luncheon before three hours of cards, fun and fellowship with members of different clubs.
The Guest of Honour taking part was Mrs Betty Blaikie, who participated in the initial game in 2003.
Fifty-four participants voted the activity an outstanding success.
Participants represented:
Leeming Combined Club
Murdoch Combined Club
Canning Vale Combined Club
Booragoon Men's Club (with their ladies of course).
