Coalition prepares to move in
Senior members of the Coalition government will meet in Canberra today to take the reins of Australia. The Coalition is on track for a 32-seat majority after securing a number of key Labor seats in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria. Incoming Prime Minister Tony Abbott has confirmed Joe Hockey as treasurer, Julie Bishop will take on foreign affairs and Warren Truss will tackle infrastructure and transport as part of his new front bench team. Queen portrait missing
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth by Australian artist Rolf Harris is reportedly missing, with no one able to confirm its whereabouts. A spokesman for the Walker Art Gallery told the UK’s Daily Mail that they had the painting on loan until August 2012 after which it was returned to Buckingham Palace, although the Royal Collection reportedly says it has gone back to the BBC. Man lost in Andes found alive
A Uruguayan man missing in the Andes since May has been found alive in Argentina’s San Juan province. 58-year-old Raul Fernando Gomez Cincunegui allegedly survived on sugar, raisins and food in mountain huts as well as rats that he hunted with a homemade trap. Read more.
Guards apologise to Prince Andrew
Prince Andrew has received an apology from police after royal protection officers challenged him in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. Security was stepped up following a break-in at the Palace. 107-year-old man killed in Arkansas
US police have killed a 107-year-old man during a shootout in Arkansas. Monroe Isadore was found by police pointing a gun at two people. The victims were led out of the house before supervisors began negotiations with Isadore. Read more.
