China’s worst earthquake in three years kills more than 200 people and leaves almost 12,000 injured. Meanwhile, the Boston bombing suspect may never be able to talk after a bullet to his throat injures his tounge.
Earthquake rocks China
Rescue workers are clearing roads as emergency teams try to reach a town hit by an earthquake in Sichuan, southwest China. It has been reported as China’s worst earthquake in three years. The death toll stands at more than 200 people and approximately 12,000 people have been injured. ABC News has more.
Boston suspect may never be able to speak
Authorities may never know what motivated the Boston bombings after the younger suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was shot in the throat following a standoff with police, leaving him unable to speak. He remains in a serious but stable condition. Read more on Tsarnaev’s condition. Investigators believe that the brothers were planning other attacks due to the amount of weapons uncovered. Australian paralympian Kurt Fearnley secured a thrilling win in Sunday’s London Marathon, timing his sprint perfectly to just inch over the finish line before Switzerland's Marcel Hug. Read more and watch the photo finish in the video below.
Murray-Darling River to be conserved
The remaining untouched part of the Murray-Darling River has been sold to a conservation group, ensuring its preservation. The Naree cattle station, home to all types of bird and plant life, has been bought by Bush Heritage Australia, using money donated by scientists, philanthropists and the public. Croc bites man on head
A crocodile has bitten a man on the head as he wrestled to get out of its grasp. The Frenchman had swum out to retrieve a dingy when the croc struck off the Territory coast. Read more.
South Island floods after heavy rain
The top of New Zealand’s South Island was drenched over the weekend, triggering an emergency response. At least 100mm of rain fell over an hour with Richmond and Stoke the worst affected areas. Watch the story on Sky News.
Mariners for the win
The Central Coast Mariners took out the A-League grand final on Sunday night, finally clinching a win after three previous attempts. The Mariners took out the title with a 2-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers in front of a capacity crowd in Sydney. News.com.au has more.
