Royal baby’s first public appearance

The world has finally laid eyes on the Prince of Cambridge, but continues to wait for the announcement of his name. The proud parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, emerged from St Mary’s Hospital to pose for photos and chat briefly with the media crowd.

“He’s got a good pair of lungs on him that’s for sure,” his father told gathered media. “We’re still working on a name, so we’ll have that as soon as we can." 

“It’s such a special time,” said the Duchess. “I think any parent will probably know what this feels like.”

Asylum seeker boat sinks

An asylum seeker vessel headed for Christmas Island sunk south-west of Java overnight.

The boat was carrying up to 100 people, and Indonesian authorities have rejected the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s offer of help with a rescue operation now underway.

ABC News is reporting that one person is thought to have died, while SMH.com.au has the figure as high as 60.

Man charged over Melbourne assault

A 36-year-old man has been charged over an alleged kidnapping and sexual assault in Melbourne’s eastern suburb of Croydon earlier this month.

John Szabo was arrested earlier this week as police investigated a series of assaults in the state over the past two-and-a-half years, and will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning.

Underage driver killed

An 11-year-old boy has been killed after he crashed a car into a tree.

A young boy was driving on a rural property at Frankland River, WA when the car overturned and hit a tree. His nine-year-old sister was also in the vehicle and has received treatment for an arm injury in Perth.

Missing teenager found

A teenager who disappeared while on her way to school over four months ago has been found alive and well. Returned to her family on Tuesday, 14-year-old Bethany Neville has been living in Cessnock in the Hunter Valley. An interview with Neville’s parents on the Channel Ten program, Wanted, assisted in her discovery.
