Loss of a cricket great

The world is mourning the loss of Tony Greig, who passed away from cardiac arrest on the weekend. South African born, Greig played for and captained England, and was a key figure in recruiting international players for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket. Greig moved to Australia and has been commentating cricket ever since. Greig was particularly known for his pitch reports. Read the full story or watch the video below.

Hussey retires

In other cricket news, Mr Cricket, Michael Hussey, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the Australian summer saying his family needs to come first. Read more.

Paedophile found dead

Dennis Ferguson, convicted paedophile has been found dead in Sydney. The death is not being treated as suspicious. Ferguson served 14 years in jail after being charged with abduction and sexual assault. Read the full story on the SMH.

Body found in Rose Bay water

A body found approximately 200 metres off Rose Bay Wharf is believed to be that of a mother who allegedly fell overboard overnight. The woman was on board the boat with her family when she was discovered missing by her husband, who raised the alarm shortly after midnight. SMH has the story. 

Dealing with the fiscal cliff

US Political leaders are meeting in an attempt to stop America’s economy falling off the fiscal cliff. If a deal is not reached in Congress, approximately $US600 billion of spending cuts and tax increases will take effect come the new year, stifling the US economic recovery and possibly sending the country back into recession. The ABC has more.

Ringing in the New Year

Police around the nation are calling for party revellers to be responsible for themselves and their friends when ringing in the New Year. Come midnight tonight, fireworks will be going off around the country, with displays for 2012/13 tipped to be the biggest yet.
