Origin of the Banners

The official Banner was made by Norma Woods in 1993 at the request of President Bonnie Lovitt.  This is an outstanding formal banner.  Norma (wife of Harry Woods) was a very talented lady.

The show Banner was made by Maimie Pendlebury and in her own words:

In 1993 Ray and I retired and joined the Sandown Probus Club.  We attended the annual Friendship Day with all clubs in the area.  It was at this gathering I noticed other clubs had banners depicting the area they came from. e.g. Mornington Peninsula with the seaside etc.  I then thought it would be nice if Sandown had a banner depicting the area of Sandown and the Sandown Club.

I put the suggestion forward to the President and the committee for approval and this was accepted.

This is where the fun started as I had to research the planning of Sandown.  Sandown was well known for horse, cars, motor bike and greyhound racing.  (Motor Bikes are no longer racing there.)

Thankfully Les Collins was a member of the Sandown Racing Club and he was invaluable at obtaining photos of horses, finishing post, greyhounds and motor bikes.

Once I had the photos it was a matter of laying out the design.  Ray and I spent many hours and lots of cuppa’s at the home of Les and Pauline Collins planning the layout.

Once we had the layout I then had to buy the material and put the blocks together.  Ray helped with the Probus Emblem, which was the easiest block to do.  The hardest part was the motor bike and horses, as at that time you couldn’t buy material to make them.

I had only been quilting for a short time when I started this project and was very pleased with the Banner when finished.

It was my pleasure to contribute the Show Banner to the Sandown Probus Club.

Sandown Probus is very grateful to Maimie (1993-2005) for her contribution to the Club.
