A fabulous first year
28 Oct 2014
The Probus Clubs of Indooroopilly West and its twin, the Probus Club of Indooroopilly, were born early this year when the Rotary Club of Brisbane Planetarium advertised for members for a new Probus club. The response was such that a decision was made to form two clubs.
The ‘western’ twin has had a very successful first year due to a hard-working committee and enthusiastic members who have formed interest groups. The club membership has grown to 75 with monthly meetings attended by 40 to 50 members.
The interest groups include a ‘foodies’ group, a garden group, and a mah-jong group. Other groups are in their formative stages and should be fully active by early next year.
Members have been on a number of tours and outings throughout the year. The tours have been locally and further afield. An example of the latter was a day trip to Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah, NSW. Outings have included barefoot bowls (see photo) and croquet.
We have also been entertained and informed by a guest speaker at each monthly meeting. The speakers have included a retired supreme-court judge, and several authors whose books were available for purchase at meetings. One of these talks was of considerable pertinence, being by a physiotherapist who gave advice on healthy ageing.
All but two of our meetings have been in an auditorium at Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha. An enjoyable aspect of these meetings has been morning tea. The caterer has satiated members with a variety of savoury foods and delicious sweets (see photo).
The last meeting for the year will be our Christmas Party on December 9. This will give us an opportunity to celebrate what a year it has been, and raise a glass in anticipation of an equally successful second year.
