Mallet attack
12 Dec 2012
Competition was intense when 30 members of the Mitcham Hills Combined Probus Club gathered for a morning of croquet at the Coromandel Valley Croquet Club.
The Probus members were very limited in croquet experience but, after some basic instruction from croquet players, many Probus friendships were tested as the rivalry intensified! The new players soon developed many attacking and defensive tactics to thwart opponents and it was soon apparent that males and females play this game on an equal footing. It was the unanimous view that another session should be scheduled.
The first set of rules for the game of croquet was registered in London back in 1856 and the All England Croquet Club (now the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club) was formed at Wimbledon in 1868. We learned that there are approximately 50 clubs in our own state of South Australia and it is a growing sport as younger players take up the game.
After the heat of competition, players adjourned to the local inn for a pleasant lunch.
