The Anzac spirit
23 Jun 2015
Members of Upper Yarra Probus Club enjoyed a unique experience when they were served lunch in the ‘trenches’ to honour the spirit of the ANZACs.
A suitable site was found at the home of two of the members who had deep terracing that resembled in a vague way, the trenches of World War I. Members dressed appropriately which added to the atmosphere. They all lined up at the Canteen where lunch was served, consisting of camp pie, dry biscuits, jam and rice, followed by billy tea with powdered milk.
Following lunch, members were asked to relate family experiences of wartime, then everyone joined in the reading of the ode. Just as we finished this, a ‘parcel from home’ arrived, containing treats such as fruit cake, cheese and biscuits and even chocolate.
The fit ‘soldiers’ were then taken by the sergeant on reconnaissance, following wallaby tracks through the bush. Tea was then served and we headed for home, tired, reflective and happy to have once again enjoyed the company of others.
