Russley Probus visit the wonderful Wairarapa

Members of Russley Probus Club enjoyed a bus tour to Wairarapa.

The group gathered in Wellington for a High Tea luncheon, complete with sandwiches, savouries, and scones before heading off on their journey.

The tour bus driver mentioned that people started growing grapes and producing wine in Wairarapa in the 1970s, after which it became an appealing destination, often associated with cafes, crafts, bookshops, and businesses.

A highlight was the Mount Bruce Conservation Area where the group enjoyed a tour around the forest park – seeing beautiful native birds, including a Kiwi, in a darkened enclosure. This wildlife centre concentrates on maintaining and increasing the native bird population, by having an active breeding programme, releasing birds into safe areas, and monitoring their progress.

Another highlight had been visiting the North Island’s tallest lighthouse standing 52 metres above sea level. It is also considered the windiest place in New Zealand.

The group agreed that it was a delightful and informative trip with Kip ‘n’ Dayle leading the way. Dayle kept everyone smiling with his jokes and stories, while Sandra was ahead of the group with all the meals sorted.

Many new friends were made, other friendships deepened, and fantastic memories for all.
