Qantas has given workers two weeks to make a decision on voluntary redundancies. In other news, Sydney and Melbourne have both appeared on the list of the world’s most expensive cities.
Qantas gives two weeks to consider redundancy
Qantas has given approximately 1500 workers two weeks to consider a redundancy, with 5000 jobs to be cut in the next three years. According to Australian Services Union NSW branch secretary Sally McManus, the airline will start forcing redundancies if the offer is not taken up by enough staff. Read more.
Halve your daily sugar intake
The World Health Organisation is advising people to halve their daily sugar intake in order to combat obesity. The 2002 guidelines say that sugars should make up less than 10 per cent of daily energy intake, however WHO now stresses that less than five per cent is ideal. ABC News has the full story.
Most expensive cities announced
Sydney and Melbourne have been included in the top 10 in the latest list of the most expensive cities. Singapore has dethroned Tokyo to take the number one spot. The report considers currency appreciation, price inflation and high cost of living. Sydney has come in at number five while Melbourne sits at number six. American socialite with Australian connections murdered
Nancy Pfister was found dead by a friend at her home in Colorado, allegedly murdered by her former tenants William F Styler III, 65, and Nancy Christine Styler, 62. The American socialite expressed fears about the Stylers while holidaying in Australia just days before she was murdered. She posted on her Facebook page about wanting to stay in Australia just days before she returned to the US. Read more.
Newspaper corrects 161-year-old story
The New York Times has corrected a 161-year-old story about Solomon Northup. The Oscar-winning movie 12 Years a Slave is based on Northup, a man sold into slavery. The original article misspelled his surname. Read more.
