Many happy returns

The Loxton Men’s Probus Club recently celebrated its 30th birthday at a special gathering recently, attended by over 75 members and partners from all over the Riverland and the Mallee.

Held in the Loxton Hotel’s function room, the celebration featured a cake cutting ceremony, performances by the Probus Club Men’s Singers, local Probian guitarist Allan MacKinnon and presentations on the club’s rich history.

The Loxton Men’s Pribus Club was established on 24 June 1985 at the suggestion of the then Loxton Rotary Club president, Neil Schlein, who attended the celebration as guest speaker with his wife.

“Fifty-five men attended the initial information meeting, resulting in 55 applications to join the newly established organisation,” he recalled. “Initial club membership fees were set at $10 per person, while a charge of $1 applied for morning tea.”

Probian Neil Prior gave an account of the club’s history.

“The membership soon increased and eventually over 100 members were enjoying the friendly and social atmosphere of the club. Our club established a singing group, which has given much enjoyment over the years,” he said. “They perform at the Loxton Hospital, Lutheran Rest Home and at similar venues, club birthdays and Christmas luncheons.”

“Together with the Riverland Probus clubs, we are involved in fishing competitions, car rallies, coach tours, annual church thanksgiving services and annual lawn bowls tournaments of which Loxton Probus club currently holds the trophy.”

Wally Miller, the only remaining inaugural member, was invited to cut the 30th birthday cake and shared fond memories of the “many funny floats” created for the Mardi Gras each year. He urged members to recapture the fun and humour of these projects and spoke fondly of the many friends he has made over the years, thanks to Probus.

Wally is the club's only honorary member, while Les Siddall is the only remaining life member awarded for his services as treasurer over the years. Those present enjoyed a delightful three-course luncheon, enjoying the beautiful birthday cake for sweets.
