From Bendigo to Broken Hill!
30 Aug 2017
Early in May 45 members and friends from Strathfieldsaye Combined Probus club, had a week away at Broken Hill. After lunch at Swan Hill and a stop at Lake Boga to see the Catalina Flying boat display, we arrived at Wentworth to spend our first night.
The next day we arrived at South Broken Hill and enjoyed some old fashioned soda at milk bar & museum, and then onto the Royal Flying Doctor Service, where we saw the planes used, and received a great deal of information on the service and what it means to those in the ‘outback’ –then on to Jack Absalom’s gallery before retiring to our motel for the next four nights.
An early start on our first day at Broken Hill took us to the School of the Air to watch a prep class in progress, with the use of computers a useful addition to lessons. We then had a tour of the city & surrounds and visited places of interest , that evening we visited the Living Desert Sanctuary and sculptures on a perfect night to capture some great photos. Over the next few days we visited a number of well-presented museums and art galleries. A day trip to Silverton included a trip down an old silver mine, fortunately with hard hats supplied, the Silverton Hotel, also the ‘mad max’ museum, artists galleries and an interesting museum at the old Gaol.
Our last night at the Broken Hill motel had many dressing up in ‘roaring twenties’ fashions with music and skits from that time which was hugely enjoyable. Finally on our return trip, we had a 3 hour cruise on the Murray River in a paddle boat from Mildura, a very pleasant evening to finish our trip, before a leisurely return to Bendigo.
