Cottage by the sea
04 Jun 2014
Donvale Hill Probus Members travelled to Queenscliff recently on a lovely tour.
The arrival at Cottage by the Sea could not have been more welcoming. A wonderful morning tea was served on the veranda with sea views, and all appreciated the homely touches and homemade biscuits.
Along with a tour of the building, the group was shown a very informative DVD of the remarkable 120 year history of the Ministering to Children’s League started in England by the Countess of Meath. It spread through Europe, Africa and Asia.
Travelling to Australia by ship Elizabeth Calder met the Countess and was inspired to form a League in Victoria. After fundraising across the state, sufficient funds were raised to complete the original Cottage by the Sea in 1895.
From then to now, with a few years as a Military Hospital in World War 2, the Cottage has served as a happy and safe haven for children from many walks of life.
The staff are dedicated to the individual needs of the children during their stay, making them feel very special, giving them emotional support and confidence. A truly amazing team!
Children arrive for various reasons including family illness, respite from fire and drought ravaged areas of the country or refugee camps, family separation. They enjoy the beach and the many activities provided with qualified instructors, swimming and surfing, often seeing the sea for the first time!
Many children return in their teenage years to Volunteer and Mentor younger children.
Lunch was at the Queenscliff Bowling Club, with a delicious meal served with yummy desserts. Then to burn off those calories, some time to wander around Queenscliff and some very important retail therapy for the ladies.
The men all seemed to find a comfortable 'man chair' with a paper to read or a coffee!
The homeward journey on the ferry to Sorrento was calm. It was lovely to stand on the deck and enjoy the breeze and clear air in the middle of the bay.
