Happy birthday, Narrabeen Lakes

The Probus Club of Narrabeen Lakes was founded on 29th November 1989, having been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Narrabeen Lakes.

It was a men's club and membership peaked at about 60 members. During the following years, the club embraced many of the activities expected of Probus Clubs, and long-term friendships were created. The inevitable ageing of long standing members, coupled with the difficulty of attracting only men to the club, resulted in a static situation, not as active as in earlier years.

While membership was being maintained at about 54, this was not good enough to sustain activities, and accordingly on 17 October 2013, the members voted to make it a mixed club.

The change immediately attracted more members including couples, the membership rising to 98 with more to come.

And so, when our 25th anniversary approached, the club was buzzing with the prospect of a memorable lunch, attended by 75 persons at the new Bayview Golf Club clubhouse, overlooking the beautiful course. At the lunch, five of the original members from 1989-1990 were presented with Certificates of Appreciation and a small gift. There was a photo art group display, and member Bill Squires read a poem which he had written for the occasion. Member Ken Russell gave an excellent talk on the history of the club. A monster cake was enjoyed by all.
