A step back in time

Nearly 500 Probians from South East Queensland descended upon the Samford Showgrounds to enjoy this year’s Fellowship Day. The theme was ‘Back to the fifties’ and the day was filled with entertainment and friendship.

This year the event was organised by the Carseldine Probus club and what a wonderful day it was. Over 50 lucky door prizes, magnificent raffle prizes and entertainment made the day a huge success. Michael Handfield, President of the Carseldine Club, introduced PAQ President, Peter Bishop to get the day rolling. Our emcee for the day, Patrick Pickett, Manager and Conductor of the Queensland Pops Orchestra introduced Peter Dutton, Federal Member for the area and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection who officially opened the celebrations.

The first entertainers were the Carseldine Probus Square Dancers. This was their first public performance. For many weeks, they diligently practiced their routines under the instruction of Carseldine Club member David Pearce and - joy of joys - it all came together on the day.

They were followed by the polished and very professional PAQ Choir, who well and truly took us back in time with renditions of popular songs from the fifties. Anita Reid, a well-known bush poet, then regaled the mob with saucy rhymed stories reminiscent of the era. Later, the Queensland Police Pipe Band entertained us with timeless tunes that are still popular and then the band, Shindig, had many on their feet with rock and roll from the fifties and sixties.

The awards for Best Decorated Table, Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Man events were all announced, too. The winners each won prizes donated by wonderful sponsors.

The major sponsors again this year were Renaissance Retirement Villages, Trade Travel and Grand Pacific Tours. However, the event would not have been such a success without the magnificent support of almost 40 other local sponsors who brought joy and excitement to many Probians.
