Warwick Combined mystery tour
18 Oct 2013
Members of the Warwick Combined Probus Club enjoyed a mystery tour based on the history and development of the southern Darling Downs. During the journey, President David Free provided commentary on the history, crops and geographical features of the district.
The Darling Downs Zoo at Pilton provided an introduction to a relatively new business which has been developed by ex-circus entertainers Steve and Stephanie Robinson. Many exotic animals and birds are exhibited in an Australian bush setting.
A visit to the Rudd memorial park provided an insight into the farming activities and the history of the 'Dad and Dave' family
The Wheatsheaf hotel at East Greenmount lost its roof to a storm several years ago. The host provided a short history of farming in the district and of the hotel. East Greenmount was originally called Emu Creek. The school was established in 1875 through the efforts of settlers. It is the oldest rural school in Queensland and continues to be known as the Emu Creek State School. Emu Creek was renamed East Greenmount by bureaucrats without consulting the residents of the area.
After lunch at the historic Greenmount hotel, the return journey to Warwick was broken by a visit to the craft shop and Sister Kenny memorial display at Nobby. Lorna Rickerts entertained the visitors with a commentary and a short film depicting the treatment of polio which was introduced by Sister Kenny.
